5 minutes with Serpent and the Swan
Ahead of their market showcase at New Form in October, we spoke to boutique fashion label founders Lauri and Hayley Smith of Serpent and the Swan, on how they started out doing what they love - and what they love doing now!
What made you launch your label, Serpent and the Swan?
We felt there was a gap in the market for quality clothing and accessories that had a different point of view and aesthetic - especially with our handcrafted trimmings for that unique edge and identity.
Where and how did you learn your craft?
Hayley: I studied Fashion Design at UTS and then worked at various fashion houses. I now study fine jewellery making at night too.
Lauri: I studied Fine Arts at COFA, then went on to study special effects and prop making.
What is your favourite fashion trend or colour at the moment and why?
We don’t really look to trends, but we are always obsessed with black, grey and we tend to throw in a metallic or two!
Who is the most inspirational person in your life?
Hayley: My partner, he is a photographer - he goes by Mclean Stephenson.
Where do you see yourself in 5 and 10 years?
World domination of course ;)
The reason I love Sydney is..
Best spot for brunch in Sydney is..
Little Lord in Camperdown – the best 3 cheese toastie ever!
On Sundays I like to..
Hayley: Eat cheese toasties & drink wine with friends at Camperdown oval, accompanied with my dog Frida & 18month old daughter Odette.
Lauri: Go for a swim!
