Young Designer Profile: Carley Rose the Label
We grab 5 to chat to young designer Carley Rose hailing from the Central Coast (NSW), who is currently one of the designers in the Design Residency's incubator program - helping young designers launch as a business. As Carley Rose the Label, she creates a bohemian aesthetic, derived from her love for the earth and water and all living organisms they encompass.
What made you launch your label?
I can't actually remember a time when I wasn't planning to launch my own label, I think I had decided to do this so long ago! The real reason behind it though is because I knew I wanted to work in fashion but I didn't want to contribute to all of the negative aspects of the fashion industry; the pollution, the slave labor... So I decided Carley Rose The Label was going to be all about Fashion with a Conscience.
Where/how did you learn your craft?
I studied Fashion Design at Raffles College of Design and Commerce in Parramatta. I learnt so much about how the industry works and how to professionally go through a design process. Some of my skills come from my childhood though, I've always been into arts and crafts and making things with my hands and some of that still comes through in my work today.
What is the most exciting moment for your label so far?
Showing at Sydney Fashion Week this year was by far the most exciting thing for my label yet! To be placed on that platform along with other amazing Aussie designers was just awesome and I finally had a chance to hear what Australia thought of my designs which was just incredible.
What is your favourite fashion trend or colour at the moment and why?
I love that patches have made a comeback and we're seeing a lot of self expression and customisation in people's style. I guess you could say I like that there is a trend to not follow the trend!
Who is the most inspirational person in your life?
Im lucky enough to have a large extended family who I always feel very supported by. My parents and hubby are always pushing me along and giving me courage and my sisters are great for feedback. But when I think about the person who inspired me to try all of these different things like sewing, knitting, embroidery... all of these crafts that I include in my designs, that inspiration all comes from my Nanna. I love her to death I just wish I had more time to see her!
On Sundays I like to..
If I'm not sewing up a storm I like to take my bunny Peppa outside with my hubby and we lay in the sun while she hops around... she's basically our child!
