Taking customised garments to a whole new level is Florence of Sydney label RENCE. The designer/artist takes pre-loved items and gives them a new lease on life by fixing them and then hand painting them with her own drawings and designs - or to custom order. Florence McGlynn chats to us about the story behind RENCE, the rise of fast fashion, and her quest to become a cobbler!

What made you launch your label?
The emotional attachment I have to wearable things

Where did you learn your craft?
I am a self taught painter from an artistic family. I have been undergoing a shoe repair apprenticeship for the past 6 months.

What is the most exciting moment for your label so far?
So far the most exciting moment was when we had our film developed from the first photo shoot. My photographer and friend Simone Taylor perfectly captured the essence of Rence.

What is the most unexpected thing to come out of running your own label?
Realising this is much more than just painting clothes. It has got me researching the effects of the fast fashion industry and making more sustainable and conscious decisions in all aspects of my life.

What is your favourite fashion trend or colour at the moment and why?
I don’t like to follow trends but blue denim is always classic. The more I bleach my hair the more I love wearing baby pink.

Who is the most inspirational person in your life?
Roger Metry of Roger Shoe Repair “Work will never kill you – but stress will”

Where do you see yourself in 5 and 10 years?
Within 5 years I would like to be a fully trained cobbler. Within 10 years I would love to have the opportunity to work with Fair Wear in Amsterdam.

The reason I love Sydney is..
Creative people doing creative stuff.

Best spot for brunch in Sydney is..
Yens Vietnamese in Waterloo. Never to early for a Pho

On Sundays I like to..
Hang out at the shoe repair for a chinwag, a glass of red and some wisdom.

Visit RENCE at the first edition of New Form, on Sunday 8 October at 3 Gladstone Street in Enmore.
New Form is a curated market and hangout space for lovers of fashion and culture.
